Gestational diabetes (GDM) also called diabetics during pregnancy is a form of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy. Most women won’t be affected by it once the baby is born, but some women may continue to have high blood glucose levels. It is diagnosed when the blood glucose level increase for the first time than the average level. According to NDSS Gestational diabetes is the fastest growing type of diabetes in Australia, affecting thousands of pregnant women.
WHO IS AT RISK:
The below mentioned groups are most likely to be affected by gestational diabetics.
Women aged 40 years or over
Have a family history of type 2 diabetes or a first-degree relative (mother or sister) who has had gestational diabetes
Have had elevated blood glucose levels in the past
Have had gestational diabetes during previous pregnancies
Have previously had Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Have previously given birth to a large baby (weighing more than 4.5kg)
Are taking some types of anti-psychotic or steroid medications
Have gained weight too rapidly in the first half of pregnancy.
Gestational diabetes is diagnosed using an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)usually this test is conducted around the 24th to 28th week of pregnancy (Except for women who are already diagnosed with diabetics) and much earlier for women with higher risk.
